The Giant Ostrich
As a flightless bird that dominates on land, it teaches us to embrace what sets us apart rather than dwelling on what we lack.

Medium: Seed Beads and iron wires

Ostriches (Struthio camelus) are ancient, flightless birds with ancestors dating back 40–60 million years, originally evolving in Eurasia before migrating to Africa about 20 million years ago. Once widespread across Asia and Africa, they were heavily hunted for feathers, leading to their domestication in South Africa in the 19th century.

The ostrich is a remarkable animal that holds several world records, being the largest and heaviest living bird and the fastest land birdon Earth.

In ancient Egypt, Ostrich feathers symbolized truth and balance. Ostrich eggs were used as vessels in Mesopotamia and found in prehistoric Mediterranean tombs. In the 18th and 19th centuries, high demand for feathers led to severe population declines. The Arabian ostrich subspecies was hunted to extinction by the mid-20th century.

Today, ostriches are primarily found in Africa, with two extant species (Struthio camelus and Struthio molybdophanes) that are generally secure, although the Somali ostrich is considered vulnerable. In various philosophies, the ostrich represents a paradox of strength and vulnerability.
